The world’s appetite for energy continues to expand.

As the leading research university in Western Australia, UWA is focusing its energy research on providing high-quality value in a range of areas that support the sustainability of the energy industry and the discovery of new competitive opportunities.

Research

We focus our research on six areas.

Oil and gas
The world’s continuing demand for energy has ensured that hydrocarbon resources, including natural gas and oil, will remain a major source of energy into this century.
Geothermal
The Earth contains an enormous amount of heat, and harnessing this heat is one of the great challenges we face this century.
Coal
Australia, which relies on coal as its major source of primary energy as well as for economic development, is the largest coal exporter in the world.
Bioenergy
Bioenergy involves the use of biofuels of biological and renewable origin, like bioethanol, biodiesel, and biomass, and is the subject of increasing attention around the world.
Energy options
Current concerns about peak oil and greenhouse gas emissions from fossil fuels mean that there is a strong focus on future energy sources.
Gas to liquid (GTL)
Converting gas to liquid (GTL) is a relatively new area of research, integral to solving the puzzle of future energy sources.
